Welcome to Friday Feels

Opening up my safe to you…

This Friday Feels blog post is inspired by a conversation with one of my coaches. I said that I often have so many ideas, so much content around mindset coaching, meditation and breathwork! I barely know where to channel it all!

Often in life, we are waiting for the perfect time to share or take action. And we wait and wait, and think about taking action – oh my, spending so long thinking about taking action! But then nothing happens… this is a pattern I can fall into sometimes.

I am also reminded of this excellent Annie Dillard quote:

“One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.”

— Annie Dillard, The Writing Life

This is not just about writing. It’s about any idea or creative impulse! So this is me taking action and opening my safe, before it all turns into ashes…

Five Reasons for Friday Feels

There’s often a sense of excitement as we head towards the end of the week – Fri-yay and all that. I believe every day is just as exciting and deserves celebration! But let’s tap into those Friday vibes anyway shall we?

So! *drum roll*

Here are five inspiring things from my world this week; or, five reasons for Friday Feels:

1. Song of the week

Bigger by Beyonce (Spotify or YouTube)

Oh my! If the walls in my house could talk, they would say “HOW MANY MORE TIMES DO YOU HAVE TO PLAY THIS?!” I have basically had it on repeat. Listen to the lyrics and tell me they don’t move you too? “You better wake up, because you’re part of something way bigger”. Yesss, Queen B!

2. Quote of the week

“Be in the world but not of it”.

In between listening to Beyonce on repeat, I must have also uttered these words to myself a dozen times this week. You are in this world but don’t need to get sucked into all the human drama and give your power away. Freedom comes from being able to observe what is happening around you, but more importantly to know what is happening with you. Drop back into yourself and feel what’s here. Stand in your truth, rather than get lost in the stories and narratives that other people have about the world. Word!

3. Practice of the week

Cold water + breathwork! Recently I was invited down to join Miranda and Sam, of The Breath Connection, at Sale Water Park for a morning breathwork session and cold water dip. They do amazing work with the police and veterans, focusing on breathwork and cold water to support positive mental health and PTSD. You can book a session with them at Sale or Marple in the North West. Check out their work and their story here: TheBreathConnection.Org. Spread the word about these awesome people!

4. Article of the week

A client shared this HBR article with me: ‘To Recover from Burnout, Regain Your Sense of Control’. I really resonate with being empowered to take responsibility for your own mental health and circumstances in life. As it says in the article: “It’s far better to adopt an ownership mindset, that sounds like this: Others may have contributed to my situation, but I have the ability to make choices that can improve my present and future. Thinking in this way gives you the license to choose, even in small ways, to take action to recharge and build momentum. Realising you have autonomy opens up hope for the future.” You may know my story: back in 2013–14, I was struggling with anxiety from stress at work, which impacted my mental health and caused a breakdown. As a result, I am super passionate about mental health in the workplace!

5. A client win I’m celebrating this week

A beautiful coaching client of mine started a new job this month! She left a toxic workplace that was eroding her self-worth. Now in this new role, she is much more confident and has a healthier work-life balance. What’s so important here is not only is she aligning her work to her purpose, she also has more energy to spend quality time with her toddler. Family is so, so important. So, this week I am celebrating her amazing progress! “What gets celebrated gets repeated!” What are you celebrating this week?
