How to embrace anger and being ‘comfortably uncomfortable'

Hello lovely people, welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Feels, and what a week it has been! And, it’s not even over yet; at time of writing I am in the final stages of prep for a weekend retreat that I am running alongside the awesome Craig Seaton (see more here) over in the Welsh countryside, packed full of meditation, breathwork, kundalini yoga, lucid dreaming, cold water therapy and more. I can’t wait!

With that in mind, time is of the essence so let’s crack on with this week’s Friday Feels! Here are five inspiring things from my world of coaching, meditation and breathwork this week:

1. Song of the week

I Will Survive by Scary Pockets (Spotify and YouTube – it’s fun watching the music video!)

OK, so the original Gloria Gaynor rendition of I Will Survive is an absolute stone-cold classic and basically untouchable, BUT! I will say that this jazz funk version by Scary Pockets is still a helluva lot of fun. I very much enjoyed ending my free Wednesday evening breathwork session this week with it, and seeing all attendees bobbing their heads and moving their shoulders as they came round. Can confirm there was also at least one instance of JAZZ HANDS!

2. Quote of the week

And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” – Anais Nin (share the quote here on Instagram)

Have you ever felt so full of potential that you could burst, only to hold yourself back with a million and one reasons why you can’t just go for it (whatever ‘it’ may be)? I hear you and feel you!!! Before I left my last salaried job to go it alone, I was definitely in the same position. We humans are very good at being ‘comfortably uncomfortable’, and a lot of us will stay just like that, but for some of us, there comes a time where we have to let ourselves blossom. If this is you and you’re ready to bloom but need some support, drop me a line to see how I can help.

3. Practice of the week

Venting (read more in this blog post I wrote): I have been exploring anger recently (I told you it had been quite a week!) Noticing what it feels like and allowing myself the space and time to let it f-ing out. Anger is so powerful. I used to feel ashamed or even scared if I felt angry. I would have thoughts that I was a bad person, or somehow less sophisticated, being ashamed of my anger. Now I understand more about emotions, I can see that my anger is showing me when I feel threatened, or scared. Or if my boundaries are being violated. Or if what I value is being challenged.

I can thoroughly recommend learning how to safely embrace and channel your f-ing anger in powerful ways. Smash the silence. Release your pain. Feed your heart!

4. Article of the week

What’s the oldest story in the world? Ever thought about that? I’ve heard the oral traditions of the Aborigines go back 40,000 years. Well this story is even older. Have you heard the story about the Seven Sisters? I am talking about the constellation Pleiades, AKA the Seven Sisters. I could see it this week as I got up early for a cold water dip. The moon was full and bright on the horizon and the not-yet-dawn sky was still bright with stars. I could see the Pleiades.

Did you know we can only see six of the seven stars? Telescopes have identified more than 800 stars in that small region, though most humans can spot only about six on a clear, dark night. This is because two of the stars are so close, that to the naked eye, they look like one star. So how come we talk about “Seven Sisters”, even though you can only see six, unless you have a modern telescope? Cultures around the world have often referred to this constellation with the number seven, calling them the “Seven Sisters,” “Seven Maidens” or “Seven Little Girls.”

100,000 years ago, we would have been able to see all seven with the naked eye. As the stars have gradually moved, now it appears there are only six… point being, the story of the Seven Sisters may be 100,000 years old. This article talks more about the Seven Sisters and this ancient story… Our world is so old. We all go back so far… what other ancient stories may reveal more about the world than we *think* we really know? Question everything! (Did you catch last week’s Friday Feels, which features the ancient human-like race of Denisovans? Maybe the Seven Sisters story came from them…?!)

5. Client win of the week

Is your job something that, deep down, just doesn’t do for you? It’s like trying to fancy someone you just don’t fancy! Try as you might, they just don’t get your blood pumping. I’ve had quite a few coaching clients who feel this way about their job. That their heart yearns for something more, something different but they don’t quite know what. Getting honest with yourself about what you really want in life is the first step in making meaningful change. After going through my own career transfomation and working for myself, I love supporting people going through this same journey. I started working with a new client this month who’s decided she’s going to start working for herself in the wellbeing space, leaving a corporate role behind. As per that Anais Nin quote (here on Instagram), the risk to remain tight in that bud became too painful. I love seeing the courage and confidence people find as they step out and realise they can change careers and find work that feels deeply purposeful!
