Changing one's beliefs around money

Welcome to this Spanish edition of Friday Feels! I flew out to Madrid this week to see my sister. It was a surprisingly smooth journey! Genuinely.

Also, I love flying. I allowed my animal body to enjoy the sensations of take-off. I tuned into the power and thrill of the modern miracle of human flight. I delighted at the force of acceleration, feeling my body pushed back in the chair. I noticed myself getting slightly dizzy with the sudden increase in height (“whooooa!”) as the plane lifted up into the sky. And a little giggle of awe as the ground fell away and more of the horizon opened up. Cooooooool!

The most exciting part of the journey though? Walking through the arrivals at Madrid Barajas airport. I locked eyes with my sister, Morag, walking towards me after 2.5 years apart. Lots of big hugs and tears 🥲

So there’s a little Spanish flavour to this week’s Friday Feels newsletter! Snippets from my world of coaching, meditation and breathwork – with the intention to share information that brings joy, wonder and self-reflection.Vale!

1. Song of the week

Djobi, Djoba – Gipsy Kings – listen on Spotify and YouTube

I remembered the Gipsy Kings existed! It can be a joy to re-remember certain artists exist (“ooh yeah! I’ve not listened to them in ages!”). I featured this song at my weekly online breathwork session – give it a listen and let your animal body shimmy along to it!

2. Quote of the week

“Society causes you to give a shit but once you’re over 40 you stop… you go on growing, you just don’t care so much.”

My great aunt, Angela Caughey, is 92 and just published her 7th book on brain health and dementia. This is a quote from her in a recent interview.

Her life story is pretty extraordinary – particularly her brother being lost in WW2 and his plane wreckage found 70 years later… More is shared in this article which is worth a read.

Her seventh book, titled A Better Brain for Life examines the most up-to-date research to show how to foster a healthy brain, ward off common chronic diseases, and prevent, or at least slow down, the brain’s decline. Check out her book on brain health here.

Overall, her wisdom is pretty bad-ass! I am going take a leaf out of Ange’s book and give less of a shit about what others think. You with me?

3. Practice of the week

A ritual to use when spending money – Arigato Money.

Do you find yourself ever cursing paying a bill? I know there’s definitely been times where I’d grimace looking at a bill. A voice in my head might grumble “how much??” 👀 when looking at the price of something. In that moment, our body is stimulated into a stress response. If we do this habitually, we are training our mind-body system to be inherently resistant towards spending money. Because, over time, your animal body will essentially see money as a threat. That means you’ll try to avoid that threat: money.

You can see how this emotional association may then impact your overall relationship with cash flow in subtle and profound ways. I mean, it makes sense when you think about it, right?

The great news is, you can work WITH your animal body to instead train it to feel safe and joyful giving and receiving money. How? Start by using this cute and simple practice to soothe your nervous system. Say “thank you” when you spend or receive money. But FEEL it – don’t just say it. I get that you may feel silly or stupid doing this. Do it anyway! And it may not do much for you at first but trust me, this habit pays dividends over time! In more than one sense of the word 💰

4. Teaching of the week

Your emotional beliefs around money will be directly impacting your bottom line.

Do you feel fearful handling lots of money? Do you notice yourself avoiding doing your finances? Maybe you notice yourself undercharging – or overworking and thus undervaluing your work – because you feel awkward talking about money?

I totally understand how intensely emotional our relationship with money can be. Working for myself these last 3 years (and building a business during the pandemic, no less!), it’s been a hugely steep learning curve for me. I thought I knew about money and business working as a consultant previously. But what I didn’t know about was ME, money and business – i.e. my beliefs around success and money. What about you? What’s your relationship like with money?

What I know to be true is that you’re going to struggle to build a sustainable business if you have conflicting money beliefs. These wounded money beliefs can also be conveniently disguised as practical/logistical challenges or projecting outward and blaming external circumstances (e.g. “the economy!”). But there’s always a subconscious belief lurking somewhere that’s likely causing boom/bust cycles.

For example, if you feel that “Money is the root of all evil” or “money won’t buy you happiness”, this is likely creating some dissonance within you and that will be reflected in patchy income. I get it. Money isn’t everything. AND, until the revolution comes, money is here to stay. There can be so much struggle around money, which I feel is just not needed. It’s not a noble struggle.

Maybe even reading this is triggering for you. I remember so clearly about 5-years ago someone talking about money in this way. To be frank, I found it vulgar and rude. I was like “wow, you are obsessed with money!” not realising that this trigger was revealing a lot about my own beliefs on money and how I avoided certain conversations around it. By moving through these wounded stories, you can create much healthier attitudes and practices around money that allow your business to grow and provide steady resources. Who doesn’t want that?!

You can learn how to identify and shift your wounded money stories in my group coaching programme, Rich Life Blueprint, launching soon. I’m so excited to share this content with you! 5. Client win of the week

Doubling her income target in one week! Boom! 💥

I have been working closely with a few business owners and freelancers recently on their mindset and approach to business, focusing specifically on income. My client had come to me feeling in a tight spot. The pandemic had gradually slowed her cash flow and it was starting to feel really tight. She knew something needed to change and spending more money to make money felt somewhat terrifying. “What if it won’t work?” she shared her fears with me. I totally get it – it’s no fun being in that place.

When we can hold space for emotions to come through, that’s when we can start to re-engage our logical and creative mind to come up with solutions. And she did just that! She allowed herself to move through the anxiety and fear of things not working. And also to step up to the plate and have the courage to make the changes she knew would work to shift her income back to where it needed to be.

In the space of a few weeks, not only did she hit her income target of £1,000 but she doubled it to £2,000! I’m so proud of her because it takes courage to admit you’re struggling and even more courage to acknowledge that we are the primary contributor to our circumstances in life. She knew she had the power to turn things around. And turn it around she did! *claps*

You have this same power too, you know. Can you feel it? ❤️ It’s there, I promise!

That’s it for this week’s Friday Feels!

Besos y abrazos,

Briony x
