The importance of remaining calm

I read recently that sharing information is a Love Language for some people. Well, if sharing be a Language of my Love, then read on!

Here are five snippets of my world from coaching, meditation and breathwork in honour of “Friday Feels”.

1. Song of the week

Guaranteed (Humming Version) by Eddie Vedder (Spotify or YouTube)

The theme of my online breathwork session this week was freedom of expression through sound and our voice. I picked songs which gave opportunities for people to hum and sigh (my breathers are all in their own private space and on mute! So they can hum to their heart’s content!) Humming soothes the nervous system. That’s why we intuitively hum and sing to babies! Everyone was super chill by the end of the breathwork session. I am a big fan of Pearl Jam too, so you gotta love an Eddie Vedder hum along! Hmmmmmm Hmmmmmm Hmmmmm!

2. Quote of the week

“When the crowded Vietnamese refugee boats met with storms or pirates, if everyone panicked all would be lost. But if even one person on the boat remained calm and centred, it was enough. It showed the way for everyone to survive.” Thich Nhat Hanh

This quote hit me like a stone. It reveals the phenomena of co-regulation, where we tune into the emotional (physiological, hormonal and behavioural) reactions of those around us. We are social creatures, so it makes sense that we’d evolve to pick up on the subconscious signals and cues around us. How different would the world be if we all practiced more regulation of our individual nervous systems!

Tools like journalling, time in nature, playing guitar, yoga, meditation and breathwork are ways in which I keep myself calm and centred. How about you, Michael?

I’m actually hosting a free mindset coaching class today on how we can work WITH our emotions and regulate them! Come join me! Register here to watch live, or catch the replay: https://bit.ly/3gTmAbL

3. Practice of the week

Gratitude! Every day, I try to pause for a moment and appreciate what’s here. I journal every day, writing out what I am grateful for: clean water, tasty food, a warm safe home. I am grateful for my body, my health, my family and partner. I am grateful for friends. I am grateful for this life. I am grateful for this moment. And I am grateful for the awareness of this moment… Those words kept floating through my head this week: “This moment matters”. I remembered this gratitude video I watched a lot back in 2019, and it had fallen off my radar. It gets me in the feels every time, particularly the part where he says “we all go back so far…” tell me if you blub too!

4. Article of the week

One for you parents or folks who have children and young people in your life! This resource from the Government of Jersey about co-regulation and the window of tolerance is GOLD. It’s themed on how to help children coming back to school after lockdown, but it’s a really useful resource for humans of all ages!

It’s such a clearly communicated, excellently put together resource with loads of great practical advice! Including very salient points, namely “regulate yourself first”.

This point packs a punch too: “A child can sense that something is off. If a parent / teacher says everything is okay when they themselves are stressed, the child may think ‘is my body lying to me, or are they lying to me?’ This can lead to not trusting their own internal systems.” (Dr Reggie Melone; see page 8). Check the resource out and share with anyone you feel may benefit.

5. A client win I’m celebrating this week

A bit of meaningful reframing can flip a situation almost instantly! A client felt angsty, as they were blocked and unsure about how to move forward with a new programme. Everything was ready to launch, and they started noticing they were avoiding taking action. We explored what was blocking them and they realised that they just weren’t totally clear on one part of their launch. So they felt a bit wobbly about the whole thing. Once that was clear, BOOM! They signed a new client in less than an hour, SRSLY! Sometimes those tiny shifts are all we need. I go on a little rant about why you’re not really procrastinating (maybe it’s your body wisdom kicking in!) over on Instagram. Check it out.

That’s it for this instalment of Friday Feels! 🥳

Have a glorious weekend!

Big love and a squishy hug,

Briony x

P.S. Have you heard about my coaching programme, Changing Shells? It’s launching really soon, so drop a reply to this email and get in touch to find out more.
