Knowing what you and your time are worth
Welcome to this Scottish edition of Friday Feels! I have had quite the adventure whilst here (but not the adventure that I planned!) I share more in my latest blog post about the power of reframing and embracing a positive mindset.
1. Song of the week
For The Love Of A Princess from the Braveheart OST (Spotify or YouTube)
I am a big fan of this James Horner film score. I love to use this song in my breathwork sessions sometimes, as it’s quite emotive. I also watched Braveheart this week, whilst snug in a camper van in Scotland. I hadn’t seen it since it came out in the cinema in 1995. I remember both loving it and finding it so upsetting! Because of all the very real human suffering (hey! I was 10 years old and I still don’t like violent films for the same reason)… *Spoiler Alert* In researching more about my family history, I learnt that a direct ancestor of mine was hanged, drawn and quartered in Southwark in the 16th century, so the end of Braveheart is genuinely traumatising! But the music is lovely, so let’s focus on that… Aaand you can process your ancestral trauma at my free weekly breathwork sessions! Sign up for breathwork here (what a plug!)
2. Quote of the week
“Man plans and God laughs” – Yiddish proverb
I had these words uttered to me this week as I dealt with a flat tyre whilst campervaning in Scotland. Expect the unexpected! Be prepared to let go and go with the flow, because there’s so much you can’t control. I share more in my blog post about this quote and the unexpected adventure I’ve been on this week. I try to keep reminding myself: “What if everything is always working out for me?”
3. Practice of the week
Cold water therapy! A big transformation for me this year has been my relationship to the cold. I hate being cold! Or I used to. My colleagues used to tease for me for the sheer number of layers I used to wear. I grew up in a hot country and I have always found the UK weather somewhat bleak. But since starting wild swimming in February 2021, I’ve built up an awesome tolerance to the cold. Cold showers plus lots of breathwork is doing wonders for my mental and physical resilience. I’ve been swimming in Loch Katrine and Wastwater this week. It’s an ideal time of year to go as the water is still a decent temperature. Apparently it will drop by 1 degree C each week now through winter… and I plan to keep going! And just in a swimsuit. Brrrrrr!
4. Article of the week
Many studies show the impact of the colour green on our mind and body e.g. in relieving stress. To me, this is because nature is our home. How do you feel when you come home? Relieved? Secure? Relaxed? At ease? We’ve evolved from nature and it’s backdrop of trees, mosses and grasses are our home. Biophilic design is where architecture tries to embrace more of nature’s design, or mimicking a connection to nature… or y’know. Just get out into nature! And keep breathing deep, as you come home.
5. A client win I’m celebrating this week
Do you know what your time is worth? Money can be such an icky topic for many people, I get it. But, for me, we need to be confident and straight up with money. Because it is a hugely powerful force in this world. And so we need to be responsible, respectful and proactive with managing this energy. And also notice where our mindset and beliefs around money can create problems in business. A pattern I’ve observed when coaching people is how low self-worth impacts what some folks are willing to charge for their time. I helped a client with identifying where she was giving up her time for free, or for small amounts of money that was actually eroding her self-worth. Because she was under charging, she ended up feeling resentful for the work she was doing. Because she knew that she was doing an awesome job! So we explored some of the behaviours and beliefs and then she outlined a new pricing strategy for her services that felt aligned, and then we planned how to communicate this to her clients and partners. No one can tell you what your time is worth. It’s something you need to feel into and figure out for yourself. Know your worth. Know what is fair and honourable. And then have the courage to charge that amount of money. Because you are an awesome person and you deserve to be paid well and then share that positive energy out into the world!
That’s it for Friday Feels! And perhaps experiment this week by asking yourself: “What if everything is always working out for me?”, even if God *is* laughing at your plans.
She’s laughing WITH you, not at you, obvs. Promise! x
Big love,
Briony
